How do you get items from killing animals? I know you kill them to get items but I haven't got any. Could someone tell me?

That can be only bad luck. Try harder. Try on different animal species

I've killed 3 animals so far and if it's a big animal that fights back I would probably get wounded real quick and I don't know how to heal myself when I'm wounded.

You use cures to heal you. You can obtain cures from either a killed animal or buy it from the skill shop in Bazaar. When you have cures, press 2 to bring up your skills and then click on your character to heal it.

When you're wounded, lay down and wait for the red bar to turn blue. To get cures to heal yourself (while you fight) go to Hidden Valley and hunt the Hares there (not Jackalopes). What I do is I attack my prey, press f1, press 2 until I get to cures and click on the screen when my character needs healing.

When I go to the Bazzar it's just quest givers and I don't know which portal is to Hidden Valley either. I'm really new so pardon all my questions I ask.
//Edit: Okay, I found Bazaar but I still don't know where Hidden Valley is.

All maps are in Portal Island, Hidden Valley is quite tricky to find! Look at this tutorial to help you find maps:
