the error, from what I believe, is pointing to a missing rendering system, probably directx I think
I’m not sure if you can get directx on a mac though

You need to install DirectX.
I know you said you downloaded it but that error points to missing DirectX

I really don't think it has to do with the download. The error is in the updater so it's probably something with the firewall.
Are you sure you have nothing else blocking the game?
Have you run as administrator?
