Help on Shading/Background?
« on: June 20, 2014, 03:20:22 PM »
Ok, I finally found out my style of drawing, and stopped trying to do things that I'm not ready for yet. The only two problems for me are shading and backgrounds... I draw on a tablet, and was wondering an easy way to get a program either on the computer or on my ipad, preferably on my it. If there's any shading or background tips otherwise, be glad to have them! Can't exactly link the picture of my drawing until I figure out how from my ipad... ;-; I got the details, blind eyes, mane, markings, chest, fur, tail, back, and paws right, pretty much everything. I draw sort of chibi-like, big head, small body. Anyways, thank you in advance!

I'd also recommend SAI for your computer, even though I don't use it. If you want to be one of those select few who have stuck to a different program, then I'd recommend Autodesk Sketchbook. As for shading tips, I'm definitely no master, though you could choose between two shading types. I like to call them definite of rough, but I suppose you could say realistic or more on the anime-type shading. Definite) Go on a layer ABOVE the coloring and BELOW the actual lineart, drop the opacity to whatever floats your boat and draw with black where you want shading. Rough) Do the same order of layers as explained above and just use an airbrush with either lower-opacity-black or darker shades of all of the colors you used on your drawing. Good luck!

I'm all about GIMP but I heart SAI's good as well. For either, I'm sure that there is a fuzzy select tool. My favorite method for shading is to select the largest area of the subject that you can (which can take some practice) and then go for a larger, softer brush. Really, it depends if you're more the cell-shading type or the soft-shading type. Look on DA for tutorials. I've seen some really, really good ones that helped me out a lot.
