~Aeth's character tutorial~
« on: June 01, 2016, 08:34:10 PM »
While playing Last Moon you've seen big characters, small characters, tall characters, short characters, even some that are as tiny as a flea or as big as an elephant, but have you stopped to think: "How do I make my perfect character?" Here are some tips that will help you with that!

#1 Appearance

Good looking characters are very pleasant to see because of their graceful appearance and good color combination. Some of them are unique in some way, and that's what we pretend with this point: making your character as unique as possible.

-1: Look at other people's characters.  You'll probably see that some elements like some manes or tufts are used a lot. If you avoid these, you're character will look different and therefore more unique.

-2: Look at other people's colour combination. Avoid generic color combinations, like black and red or any other you've probably seen.

*Tip for colour: Don't abuse saturated colours. Try to lower their saturation a bit (but don't make it look like it's grey instead of the colour you want.

#2. Bio and personality

What can ruin a good looking character in role plays? The answer is their bio and personality.

-1: Don't make a Mary Sue/Gary Stu: IMPORTANT! Your character mustn't be overpowered (like having godlike powers like being immortal, invulnerable and a lot of other stuff) No one likes roleplaying with them because of this reason. You must make sure your character has got some flaws because perfection is one of the main qualities of Mary Sues/Gary Stus.

-2: Good backstory: Good doesn't mean complex. Your character's bio doesn't need to be long or anything like that to be good.  Make it as unique as possible by not falling in any clichés like the "overused tragic backstory".

-3: Don't use stereotypes: Stereotypes are personalities that are used very frequently in OCs. Some of these stereotypes are the "tough and reckless male" and "the evil wolf/ whatever creature it is."

Soo... that's it, guys! I can't wait to see your characters In-game and have an RP with them.

Also for colors (colors in designs is such a big thing for me omfg it makes the difference between life and death)
There's sites online that have massive databases of color palettes (and even some where you can make your own)
so if you dont know what colors might work well with other colors or what colors to use in general, try finding a color palette you like.
Hell me and my friends used to make entire char designs for each other based off of color palettes

Everything about this thread is just
AAAA

I can't explain enough how important some things on this list are, mainly the rp section, to people. It's part of the reason I've stopped roleplaying lately- I just cannot stand the standard, cookie-cutout "super strong wolf with a tragic background"

Yeah, a backstory and a unique personality is important on a char
I mean, yes it's hard to think of something totally unique that has never been done before, but simply even putting a twist on a certain stereotype can really set you apart from a crowd

I mean take my Phyrric RP char: Daratu
He's just a stereotypical clumsy af feline, however his clumsiness comes from a lack of social confidence (both go hand in hand) and the fact that his cut off tail makes him lose his balance very easily.

I mean I started out with him flirting with the leader of the group, only to be turnt down, and then ran away, starved himself out of pity, and then came back as his actual true clumsy self LOL

i'm such a good mother to my chars arent i
aren't i

Yes, yes and more yes!

Although I dont mind the design of characters as long as they have a good bio. But still... Last Moon has such a vast selection of markings, heads, bodies, manes and colors and yet people seem to stick to the popular ones. It is fun to play around with the character creator, people should do it more. I know I do xD

The bio and personality isnt just a problem here but on any roleplay site as well. Usually, generic characters are born from people not spending enough time with it. But if one would just stop and spend a couple of additional minutes on them, the best stories can be born from it.

So another key advice is to donate some time towards character creation, both for design and bio. It makes a lot of difference.

Yeah... those are sort of annoying and people gets tired of them very easily. In fact, this tutorial was made with the purpose of encouraging people to create better characters that don't have all those characteristics.

True that, creating an unique backstory is hard, but twisting the stereotypes is a great idea to write it. I also like starting with a non defined personality/ backstory and writing it as I do RPs, because you sometimes start saying your character is strong, but actually, it ends up being very weak or anything like that.

Time for character creation is very important. And yes, people usually use the popular manes or blah blah blah (I must admit I also did it and I'm redesigning the character that wears it). Also, I agree with the bio and the personality being a problem, gosh, writing a bad bio and making your char having an awful personality is the worst you can do to it!

Great tutorial Aetherna! I agree with you on many levels!

I really can't say anything else since everyone else who replied took the words out of my mouth (I'm sowwy! I just can't (\-/) ). Noice, noice! I'd love to see these things taken into consideration to create an awesome chara!
