Do Any Of You Play MMOs Outside OF The IT Servers?
« on: February 16, 2015, 08:05:14 PM »
I'm thinking about getting into the MMO scene (I've been on the fence about it for years), so I was wondering if any of y'all had any suggestions for me.

Do you guys play any MMOs outside of any of the IT servers? Should I consider getting Steam as well, or is Steam overrated?

I've tried MapleStory, but I quit because pretty much everything about was just frustrating. I've also played WolfQuest (if that counts), but once I got to the Raising Pups part, I just lost interest (I also have no interest in the Multiplayer aspect of that game. The birthplace of WolfSpeak just doesn't sound like a fun place to be). Of course, some of you from FeralHeart may remember me from that game. For those of you who don't, yeah, I played FeralHeart. It was nice, but the game began to feel stagnant after a while, especially once the creator disappeared and updates became a thing of the past. I don't know if this counts as an MMO either, but I still play The Endless Forest now and then.

So...any suggestions for an MMO noob like me?

EDIT: I'm sorry that I forgot to put this up there in the first place, but I would prefer MMOs that are free to play.

Hmm, the only MMO that springs to mind for me is World of Warcraft really, it is a pretty good game and the community can be cooperative when it comes to groups and such...

WoW does sound like fun, but I'm just concerned about the cost. I'm sorry I forgot to mention this in the first place; I'm looking more for something free to play, just in case I end up only playing casually or even not liking it.

I play Guild Wars 2. It is about $40 (they were having a half price sale a while ago, maybe it is still on) once off and then you can play as much as you want. They are brining out a new expansion this year but there will still be tonnes of stuff to keep you busy with before the year is over.

\\MMO addict runs in
HI
I PLAY TOO MANY GAMES \\shot
I uh, Have been playing Robocraft alot, which is a game where you create robots that can fly, walk, hover, or drive around arena with other robots. You have a choice between a medic-gun (Heals and can do damage. Can target multiple friendlies or enemies at the same time), a mortar-type-gun (Shoots explosives that can be either super OP or a pain in the ass. Has a drop, so you need to usually fire a ways upward from the target), machine-gun (Just as it sounds, but highly inacurate from a long distance. Can also either absolutely decimate opponents, or be 100% shit. Usually good at gradually knocking bombers/fighter planes out of the sky), or lastly the sniper-gun (Just as it sounds. Can be also OP as fuck or just totally worthless. Abnormally long reload time, but you can fire single rounds per gun [You can have, say, 5 sniper rifles on 1 robot, and thus fire 5 shots {1 shot per gun}] . But your range is unlimited, but the fog of war makes it impossible to see enemies past it)
ausoihad i need to write less, but yeah
It's kinda a TF2, Team Fortress 2, but with a more buildy element. I like it alot because of the basically unlimited range of robots you can build, as well as seeing other people's cool, shit, or halarious (I once saw a house robot driving around xD It even had a mortar on a lil tree in it's garden!) designs.
But if the whole buildy, pit-random-people-against-each-other-in-an-arena-and-death-match-ensues, thing, then I have more to recommend x)
There's a whole massive spectrum of MMO-Types to choose from, so you'll have to be slightly more specific in what you want outta one 8D

Anyways, Hope I helped!

\\EDIT: Steam is best thing ever, just don't be surprised to be totally broke when the holiday/christmas sales come around xD

This is awesome, guys. Thanks so much, and keep the suggestions coming, because those all sound awesome.

HOLD UP. WAIT A MINUTE.

WoW is free? Like, free free, or only up to a certain level?

WoW is free up to Level 10 if I remember correctly (And up to a month)
But I recommend getting a subscription afterwards, it's definitely worth it if you become dedicated enough!

Let me know what elements you want to see in an MMO, and then I can help you more, because I have a lot of MMOs I've tried out/have played/are playing, and each is different to another, but it's more about what you want to do/expect from the game!

It costs money if you play on Blizzard's server. But you can play on privately hosted servers for free, right now I play on a server for the original WoW before all the expansions. But there are lots of servers for the latest expansions.

I even used to host my own WoW server a couple of years ago.

Some old screenshots from my server:

I'll be keeping an eye on that, and I'll do some more research on the subject.

I'm looking for something in which I can create my own personalized character, something that's preferably free-to-play or pay-once-and-play, something that gives me the option of either completing quests that have to do with the game's story or just sandboxing/doing my own thing, something that I can play more or less on my own because I won't have the time to wholly dedicate myself to a guild. Anything that includes some or all of these things would be awesome. Thanks!

I think Myz's idea is the best. Take all the game suggestions and just go read up on them.

Contrary to the name Guild Wars 2 (it is a reference to the previous game and the history that shaped the world) does not require you to be part of a guild. It is more of a social group which allows you to easily get access to people if you need company or help with something. You can play almost the whole game on your own and if you don't want to pick up a guild you can use the lfg (looking for group) system to pick up a quick party for quests that require a group. It has a persistent world (the game is constantly changing). There is a bunch of events that are on a cycle but then others that follow the Living Story that causes the world map to change permanently and those events are accessible for only a certain period of time.

The game has tonnes of casual players and gear and loot is easy to come by (just some smart gaming required). You can customize your character (height, weight, face type, hair, ens) after choosing from 5 different races. There is lots of different armours and weapons and since the skin update you collect skins and then can reapply them easily to a new weapon or armour received. You can also redye all your armour pieces (sadly no weapons and you have to use gold to redesign your character)

Hehe, I wrote too much now, but it helps you to get an idea of what gw2 is and if it is a game you can consider. I fell in love with it because it is a really visually appealing game with realistic combat and cool races (not your normal elf, orc, dwarf types)
